Amid reported frustrations behind the scenes from Cifuentes, Don Goodman has questioned the motives and ambitions of the R's ownership...

QPR's 2024-25 Championship season somewhat faded into nothingness around March-time after a string of poor results, and their inconsistencies have seemingly drawn the ire of head coach Marti Cifuentes.

Reports emerged this past week that the Spaniard is considering leaving Loftus Road after the current campaign has finished, with it citing a breakdown in his relationship with 27-year-old chief executive Christian Nourry as part of his frustrations.

Cifuentes arrived at the Hoops in October 2023 to replace Gareth Ainsworth, and after saving the west London outfit from relegation, there were hopes that QPR could kick on in 2024-25 and aim for the play-offs.

Despite some promising signings on paper such as Karamoko Dembele, Zan Celar and Nicolas Madsen, QPR won just one of their first 15 league matches, but the form soon turned around, as from fixture 16 to 28, Cifuentes picked up 27 points out of a possible 29 to oversee a climb up the Championship standings.

Another slump though, which started in late January and continued until the end of March, which saw a run of eight defeats in 11 fixtures, saw the R's fall away from top six contention and further down the table.

QPR hierarchy questioned by Don Goodman over ambitions for the club

Despite the indifferent results over the course of the season, many QPR fans still believe in Cifuentes to make a positive difference at Loftus Road.

The latest news over his potential exit though is somewhat of a concern, and Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has questioned the QPR board and their ambitions for the club whilst speaking exclusively to Football League World.

"I think that should set the alarm bells ringing, Marti Cifuentes considering quitting QPR," Goodman told FLW.

"I think it would be a huge blow. Look, he came in and dug them out of a huge hole last season, and obviously expected to kick on this season, and for some of the early parts of the season it looked like they may be able to do that.

"But they've kind of just fallen away so tamely, it's turned into such a disappointing season from sort of late-January onwards, where once again they're going to be a mid-table team - never really in any danger of getting relegated and never really in any danger of threatening a top six finish.

"It's a strange football club, it's been underachieving for quite some time, and I think really the people running the club and the hierarchy need to have a look at why this football club just seems to have become a very mid-table Championship club - that surely can't be the aspirations of a club like Queens Park Rangers."

QPR could be in big trouble if Marti Cifuentes departs Loftus Road

Even though results have been inconsistent to say the very least, there is big support from the terraces for Cifuentes and his style and methods when it comes to setting QPR up on the pitch.

Given the way football is nowadays, Cifuentes could've been out on his ear after 15 matches this season after how poor the results were, but he managed to turn things around for a few months and get the R's climbing up the table again.

If he were to seek an exit from QPR, then the fans would likely turn on the board for not giving the 42-year-old enough assurances, and there is clearly work to be done on that front given Cifuentes' comments after defeat to Swansea City.
