Gareth Ainsworth’s side are reportedly interested in centre-back Will Boyle from the Red Dragons

League Two outfit Gillingham are in talks to sign Wrexham defender Will Boyle.

That’s according to journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon page, who revealed the interest of Gareth Ainsworth’s side.

Boyle signed for Wrexham in 2023 from Huddersfield Town but has struggled for game time and still has a year left to run on his original three-year deal.

We asked pundit Don Goodman whether this looks like a good move for Gillingham and Boyle.

Goodman believes Boyle and Gillingham are a match

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman said: “So, Will Boyle, he’s not particularly a player that I know a whole load about.

“I look at his career, predominantly lower league football. Did particularly well at Cheltenham, got in the League Two Team of the Season in the 2020/21 season. And that's the level, obviously, that Gillingham are going to be operating at.

“So, 29 years old, nearly 30, experienced. And after barely playing any football at all last season, he'll be keen to get playing again on a regular basis.

“So, it looks to me like a win-win all round for Gillingham and for Will Boyle.”

Boyle needs to move on from Wrexham

The Red Dragons have seen a rapid rise through the leagues so, although they only recruited Boyle two summers ago, they did so with a League Two season in mind.

Even in that season, Boyle wasn’t quite a regular starter, managing just 24 fourth-tier outings.

He missed almost the entirety of the season just gone in League One, through a mixture of selection issues and a lengthy lay-off with injury.

It seems certain, giving Wrexham are now preparing for a tough fight in the Championship, that Boyle would struggle for minutes next season in the second tier, regardless of his injury status.

Gillingham could make great use of Boyle

But Wrexham is a unique case, and Boyle still has plenty to offer the right club, at the right level.

Based on the 171 League Two appearances the centre-back has to his name, the Gills tick that box.

Ainsworth is known for his direct, relatively old-school style of play; throwing men forward, winning balls and being solid at the back.

Boyle should fit into that mould perfectly, using his sizeable frame to dominate in the air in both boxes.

Also, crucially, Boyle is left-footed, which is an attribute in centre-backs well appreciated by managers of all styles as it brings a greater balance than having two or three defenders all with the same strongest side.

Transfers in football are never sure bets, but on paper, Boyle to Gillingham under Ainsworth appears to make a lot of sense, especially given it’s a player that Wrexham will surely be willing to get off their books.
