Lee Hendrie has given his verdict on Dejphon Chansiri's £100m Sheffield Wednesday takeover stance
Lee Hendrie believes that Dejphon Chansiri must lower his £100 million valuation of Sheffield Wednesday for the club to get out of their current mess.
It was reported by Alan Nixon that the Thai businessman is holding out for a nine-figure sum in order to relinquish his stake in the Yorkshire outfit.
It has been a difficult few months in particular at Hillsborough, with financial issues disrupting their entire summer.
Players have gone unpaid in three of the last four months, leading to multiple player exits ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign.
Hendrie believes that Chansiri is asking far too much for Sheffield Wednesday with this £100 million valuation.
He’s questioned how the problems behind the scenes can be resolved if there is such a clear obstacle to a change in ownership.
“Sheffield Wednesday are a shambles of a place at the moment,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“Still want £100 million for the club, how are you meant to resolve a football club when these sort of figures are getting branded about.
“This needs a lot of work, there’s no doubt about that.
“There’s potential behind Sheffield Wednesday, there’s nobody that doesn’t think that, but I think Chansiri, at the moment, is just budging the club way too far out, particularly when you feel that this could end up being an absolute disaster for the football club if it’s not resolved quite quickly.
“So, £100 million, as I said there’s lots to deal with behind the scenes, so I think he’s asked far too much.”
Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship season will begin in under two weeks, with the team set to face Leicester City on 10 August at the King Power Stadium in an 8pm kick-off.
Chansiri can set whatever asking price he wants, but it is only worth what someone is actually willing to pay for it, and it’s hard to see anyone spending £100 million on the Owls.
It’s clear that a change in ownership is required at this stage, with the club’s financial situation causing all sorts of issues this summer.
Chansiri can no longer afford the running of the club, which has led to players and staff not receiving their pay on time.
Given the potential that a team like Sheffield Wednesday possess, there should be no shortage of potential buyers, but at a cost of £100 million they are being priced out of a deal.
