Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on Sheffield United's pursuit of Bobby Thomas
Lee Hendrie believes that Bobby Thomas could be a real coup for Sheffield United if they can sign him from Coventry City this summer.
It was reported last week by Pete O’Rourke that the Blades had submitted an £8 million bid for the defender.
It has since been claimed by The Star that the Sky Blues will be seeking defensive reinforcement of their own before sanctioning any possible sales in Frank Lampard’s backline.
The 24-year-old is now into his third season at the CBS Arena, and he started both of Coventry’s opening two games of the new term.
Hendrie is unsurprised that Sheffield United want to address a weakness in Ruben Selles’ side before the window closes.
He believes that Thomas could be a smart addition to the side, and that losing him would be a real blow for Coventry.
“Again, Sheffield United’s vulnerabilities, I think it’s starting to raise awareness and that’s why they’re looking to bring back up reinforcement,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“Bobby Thomas, when he went to Coventry, people were — not doubting, but — thinking was he going to be a good signing, and he has been.
“And that’s why they’ve taken that £8 million bid for him, Sheffield United.
“I can understand, I think it’d be a big loss for Coventry if this happened just because you do all your work during pre-season and then disrupting what you have.
“But £8 million, I’m sure that that’ll be looked at and certainly viewed.
“But I think it’d be a loss for Coventry and a good coup for Sheffield United, again just bolstering that defence.”
Sheffield United have conceded five goals from their opening two fixtures, losing on both occasions, leaving them bottom of the table as the end of the summer transfer window approaches.
Sheffield United sold both Anel Ahmedhodzic and Vini Souza this summer, so it’s no surprise they’ve become more defensively fragile.
Their opening two games made it clear that additions are still needed to reinforce their backline, so links to Thomas make sense.
If they can win the race to his signature, he could prove a smart addition given his performances at Coventry, but they face competition from Brentford and Burnley.
With so little time remaining in the market, Sheffield United need to act fast or a promotion push again this year will be very difficult at the rate they’re currently conceding goals.
