Former Napoli sporting director Mauro Meluso is willing to take the blame for the departure of Piotr Zielinski who ended up signing for Inter Milan.

The 30-year-old spent eight years at the Stadio Maradona, winning a Serie A title and a Coppa Italia trophy in the process.

The Pole cemented himself as a key pillar in the middle of the park. But like most of his teammates last season, he endured a torrid campaign.

In the end, Zielinski opted to leave Napoli in favor of embarking on a new career experience.

The Poland international thus decided to reject the Partenopei’s contract extension offers. On the contrary, he accepted Inter’s proposal, signing a pre-contract with the Nerazzurri several months ago.

Napoli retaliated by omitting the midfielder from the Champions League list in what many considered an ill-advised move.

Regardless, Zielinski has now joined his new teammates at Appiano Gentile to prepare for the upcoming season.

For his part, Meluso doesn’t shy away from his responsibility in Napoli’s failed attempts to maintain the player’s services.

The 59-year-old opened up on his dreadful solitary campaign with the Azzurri for the first time since leaving the club.

He touched on several subjects, including the Zielinski affair.

“We lost Zielinski on a free transfer and we could have done something more about it,” admitted the former Napoli director during his appearance on Sportitalia via Alfredopedulla.com.

“I take responsibility for his departure. What led to losing the player could also be economic considerations, there were various factors.

“I had a great relationship with almost all the players, even the most reserved ones. And I can say that no one had a large ego after the Scudetto.

“The Napoli locker room is full of human values. But then again, people are only interested in the sporting results, which is normal.”
