Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer has officially announced his retirement from international duty with Switzerland.

The 35-year-old former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach keeper gave a message on Instagram, explaining that he is now focusing solely on his club career.

For the better part of a decade, Sommer has been a point of reference for the Switzerland national team.

Sommer got his first senior cap in 2012.

And starting with EURO 2016, Sommer became the starter, taking over from Diego Benaglio.

The Inter keeper has been Switzerland’s goalkeeper through five tournaments. He has played an important role as they have regularly reached the knockout stages of major tournaments.

Perhaps Sommer’s highlight with the national team came at EURO 2020.

That tournament saw the goalkeeper play a vital role for Switzerland as they reached the quarterfinals of the Euros.

Sommer’s saves were key in a round of sixteen thriller against France. He proved the hero as Switzerland knocked out Les Bleus in a penalty shootout.

Sommer was also the starter for Switzerland at the Euros this summer.

However, that will be the 35-year-old’s final tournament with his national team.

There are other top keepers waiting in the wings to replace the Inter man, including Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel. And Sommer is now stepping aside to allow the new generation to take over.

Sommer wrote about his decision to hang up his gloves for the national team.

“After careful consideration, I’ve decided to end my career as goalkeeper for the Swiss national team.”

“It was a great honour and privilege to represent my country at the highest level for twelve years and 94 matches.”

“After the conclusion of another great Euros in our neighbours Germany, where I spent several unforgettable years in the Bundesliga. the time has come to say goodbye.”

“These memories will hold a special place in my heart forever.”

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all my teammates. The entire staff. The coaches. And of course, my family, my personal staff. And the the Swiss fans.”

Then, “Without your trust and belief in me, these successes wouldn’t have been possible.”

“You’ve always given me the motivation to achieve the best I possibly can.”

Finally, “Now my attention is fully on my club, Inter. I still have a lot to win with them.”
