Midfielder Davy Klaassen feels that even with Sassuolo fighting for their Serie A survival, Inter Milan know they have to aim to win.

The former Ajax midfielder spoke to InterTV, via FCInterNews, ahead of this evening’s match at the Mapei Stadium.

In this evening’s match in Emilia-Romagna, Sassuolo will have a lot more motivation to get a result than Inter do, on paper.

The Neroverdi are desperately fighting to avoid relegation to Serie B. They are currently in the bottom three of the table, five points adrift of Empoli and Frosinone who are level in seventeenth place and face each other tomorrow.

Therefore, it is looking like it’s now or never for Sassuolo to claw their way out of the relegation zone.

And Davide Ballardini’s men must try to do so against a team who have already confirmed their status as champions.

Inter clinched the Serie A title a couple weeks ago.

However, that might not be a bad thing for Sassuolo. The Neroverdi know that Inter have made a few changes to their lineup, and do not need a result for the title.

Furthermore, there is no ignoring Sassuolo’s status as a sort of “bogey team” for Inter.

The Nerazzurri have lost just once in what has been a dominant campaign for them. However, that fact becomes less grim for Sassuolo when considering that they were the ones to hand the champions that defeat.

Davy Klaassen: “Sassuolo Fighting For Survival, But Inter Have To Aim To Win”

With that being said, Inter will still feel that a result is important.

The Nerazzurri won’t want to do any favours to Sassuolo. They want to keep their momentum going and rack up as many points in the final matches of the season.

Inter could still finish the campaign with 101 points. But to hit triple digits, they must win all of their remaining matches.

Therefore, Sassuolo can hardly expect an “easier” match against Inter.

If the Neroverdi want to pull off one of the upsets against a Serie A heavy hitter they’ve become famous for – and maybe the most important one of the lot – they will need to be at their best.

Inter midfielder Klaassen anticipates that “It will certainly be a tough match.”

“They’ll fight with their lives,” continued the Dutch international.

“They’re fighting for survival in Serie A,” he noted.

“But we’re Inter. We have to fight to win every match.”

“We’re the champions,” Klaassen continued. “We want to win and we’ll try to do so tonight.”

Meanwhile, Klaassen also talked about what Inter has been like relative to his expectations when he joined on a free transfer from Ajax last summer.

“You never know what to expect when you come to such a big team,” said the Dutchman.

“But de Vrij and Dumfries had told me about the team. They’d told me good things about the team and the fans, as well as about the fans.”

“And they certainly weren’t lying,” added the Inter midfielder.
