Everton offered Dominic Calvert-Lewin a new four-year deal at the end of 2024 but he chose not to take it up, according to The Times.
Everton subsequently withdrew it after the reappointment of David Moyes as manager, and the 28-year-old left the Toffees at the end of his deal.
The Hill Dickinson Stadium club have since signed Thierno Barry as his replacement and have also added Manchester City attacker Jack Grealish to their ranks on loan.
Everton also held talks with the representatives of Calvert-Lewin in June before his deal expired at the end of that month.
Both parties could not reach an agreement and it is safe to say the length and terms of the new deal offered to him were different from those of the four-year contract given to him last year.
It is unknown if he would have eventually accepted the 2024 deal were it not withdrawn, but the arrival of Moyes changed everything.
The Toffees boss was clearly open to having the English striker remain at the Merseyside club beyond this summer, but nothing materialised.
Calvert-Lewin is now expected to join Leeds United and is undergoing a medical at the Elland Road club with a view to sealing a free transfer to the promoted Premier League club.
It remains to be seen whether Everton will miss the injury-prone striker, but he will go down as a hero with the fans after spending nine years at the club.
He will now look to prove his fitness and quality in front of goal at Leeds as the Whites look to establish themselves as mainstays in the Premier League following their return.
His replacement, Barry, is young and unproven in the English top-flight, but the Frenchman has huge potential after impressing in Spain with Villarreal last term, and he will look to hit the ground running when the campaign begins.
