EURO 2024 – France 1-1 Poland: Skorupski and Maignan kept busy | OneFootball

France played a deeply disappointing 1-1 draw with Poland, as Lukasz Skorupski of Bologna was only beaten by a Kylian Mbappé penalty, and finish second in their group.

While Poland knew they were already bottom and eliminated on zero points, they made numerous changes including Bologna goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski stepping in for Wojciech Szczesny. Les Bleus still wanted to secure top spot and welcomed back Kylian Mbappé wearing a protective mask after fracturing his nose against Austria, sending Marcus Thuram to the bench.

Skorupski used his legs to deny Milan full-back Theo Hernandez at the far post and parried from Ousmane Dembele, but Robert Lewandowski’s free header was deflected just wide off William Saliba.

Mbappé and Bradley Barcola combined at pace to force another desperate Skorupski save, while the new Real Madrid signing’s curler was also parried.

Dembele was brought down by Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior for an obvious penalty, which was converted by Mbappé for his first ever goal in a European Championship.

However, Poland also received a penalty for Dayot Upamecano’s clumsy foul on Verona striker Karol Swiderski and Robert Lewandowski saw his attempt saved by Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. It had to be retaken, as Maignan had both legs off the line when Lewandowski eventually completed the stuttering run-up. At the second time of asking, the Poland striker converted.

This result plus the Netherlands suffering a shock 3-2 defeat to Austria means that Group D concludes with the Austrians on top, followed by France and the Dutch in third.
