Erling Haaland will be out for between five to seven weeks after suffering an ankle injury in Manchester City’s FA Cup quarter-final, according to Pep Guardiola.
The City striker will miss the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, City’s last chance to win some silverware this season.
Speaking ahead of the game against Leicester, Guardiola said: “The doctors told me between five and seven weeks. So hopefully the end of the season and the Club World Cup he will be ready.”
The Spaniard’s comments are in line with the statement that the club released, also detailing that Haaland should be back for the Club World Cup in America.
The Norwegian striker has 30 goals this term, and is one of the few in the City dressing room whose standards have not dropped this campaign.
He looks miss games against Leicester, Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Everton, before that crucial clash against Forest.
City’s Club World Cup campaign begins on the 18th June, exactly 78 days from now. Barring a setback, he will be back for the competition, which boasts a prize of around £100 million for the winners.
Haaland was injured just minutes after scoring on Sunday against Bournemouth, and limped off just after the hour mark. City managed to win the game in his absence, actually scoring the winning goal two minutes after he was substituted off.
Omar Marmoush scored the decisive goal, and he will have to be the key player in Haaland’s absence. The Egyptian has five goals since joining City in January, and will likely be the player asked to take the reins for the rest of the season.
Phil Foden will also need to step up. After a disappointing few weeks in which his place in the England side has been questioned, the next few weeks could be a good chance for the forward to prove his doubters wrong.
