Vissel Kobe took a significant step in their stuttering title defence with a 2-1 victory over Kawasaki Frontale at NOEVIR Stadium on Wednesday evening.
First-half goals from Daiju Sasaki and Thuler proved decisive as Takayuki Yoshida's men secured back-to-back league wins for the first time this season, despite Marcinho's strike just before the interval giving Frontale hope.
The result leaves the J1 League table finely poised, with just three points separating the top eight teams in what is developing into one of the most competitive campaigns in recent memory.
Kobe opened the scoring on 31 minutes when loan signing Erik, who has been a revelation since arriving from Machida Zelvia in March, set up Sasaki for a clinical finish.
The hosts doubled their advantage just before half-time when defender Thuler headed home from Yuki Honda's delivery, giving Kobe a cushion their attacking play deserved.
Frontale responded immediately, with Marcinho reducing the deficit in first-half stoppage time after good work from So Kawahara, but it proved to be their only shot on target in a frustrating evening for Shigetoshi Hasebe's side.
Both managers have been forced to navigate significant injury problems in recent weeks. Kobe welcomed back Gotoku Sakai to their starting lineup after a thigh muscle injury, while midfielder Mitsuki Saito was named on the bench following his recent return from a 539-day injury absence.
Kawasaki continue to miss centre-back Jesiel with a hamstring problem, part of an injury crisis that has forced Hasebe into heavy rotation. The manager has changed as many as nine starters between games during their congested schedule of domestic and AFC Champions League Elite fixtures.
The statistics tell the story of a match where Kobe made their chances count. Despite Kawasaki edging possession (51%), the hosts were far more threatening, registering four shots on target to Frontale's solitary effort and earning eight corners to the visitors' one.
Erik was the standout performer, completing all six dribble attempts and winning 11 of 16 duels during a dynamic 90-minute display that further underlines his importance since joining on loan.
"We showed great efficiency today," said Yoshida post-match. "When you're facing a quality side like Kawasaki, you need to take your opportunities when they come."
For Kawasaki, this defeat extends their winless run to four matches across all competitions, a concerning trend for a side that started the season strongly under new manager Hasebe following the departure of long-serving boss Toru Oniki.
Frontale's attack looked blunted throughout, with Brazilian forward Erison cutting a frustrated figure and receiving a yellow card just before half-time. Their 13 fouls to Kobe's nine reflected growing frustration as the match progressed.
The visitors' best performers were at the back, with Yuichi Maruyama and Kota Takai putting in solid defensive displays that kept the scoreline respectable despite Kobe's attacking threat.
