Africa Cup of Nations history was made today in Equatorial Guinea’s 4-2 win against Guinea-Bissau, with striker Emilio Nsue becoming the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the tournament’s history.

The striker, who plays for Spanish third division side CF Intercity, hit his treble at the grand old age of 34 years and 110 days, and helped his country to an impressive victory.

Nsue scored the opening goal of the game before Guinea-Bissau equalised through an own goal from Esteban Obiang.

After Josete Miranda restored Equatorial Guinea’s lead a minute into the second half, Nsue, who also captains the side, rounded off the win and completed his hat-trick with strikes in the 51st and 61st minutes. Guinea-Bissau scored a second late into added time through Zé Turbo.

The striker, who previously played for Middlesbrough and Birmingham City, is the first player to score three goals in an Africa Cup of Nations game since Soufiane Alloudi for Morocco way back in 2008.

Following an unexpected draw with Nigeria in their opening game, Equatorial Guinea are well placed to qualify for the knockout stages. They next play hosts Ivory Coast on Monday.
