Chelsea’s injury situation is not great right now, but at least it’s pretty simple to understand.
The Blues are without a host of players, from Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana at the back to Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guehi and Noni Madueke in the front line. But they all have the same vague return date – “after the international break” in the middle of next month.
The last thing we needed was more losses, so the sight of centre back Trevoh Chalobah going off hurt against Aston Villa at the weekend was a disaster. But fortunately the issue doesn’t seem as bad as feared:
“He had a check yesterday and it will be around one week or 10 days. On one side it is good because it is not an important injury and on the other side, it is a shame because we lose another player in this moment with the number of injuries we have.”
Tosin Adarabioyo is playing at a similar level to Trevoh, so it’s not a great immediate downgrade anyway, it’s more just a worry that we’re then really down to our last two options in that position. Still, with a free weekend following our exit from the FA Cup, Chalobah might only miss Tuesday’s Southampton game.

The injuries mean that Enzo Maresca’s team almost picks itself. Once Tosin had replaced Chalobah last night, the only change to follow was Jadon Sancho coming on as a like for like switch with Christopher Nkunku.
Maresca doesn’t really trust the youngsters on the bench, certainly when chasing a game away at Villa Park. Whether he will have more confidence against Southampton remains to be seen. We were so excited to see young striker Shim Mheuka called up to the bench against Villa – could this be the moment we see him in action?
