Manchester United leapfrogged Manchester City into third place, seeing off a comeback after racing into a three-goal lead.

United were 2-0 up in 20 minutes at the Etihad, Ella Toone lifting the ball over Khiara Keating for the first then Leah Galton spinning to net the second following a corner kick.

Celin Bizet dispossessed Leila Ouahabi in the penalty area and Toone got her second goal of the night, City responding twice before the break through headers from Vivianne Miedema and Rebecca Knaak following Mary Fowler deliveries.

Just ten seconds after the restart Toone completed her hat-trick, Elisabeth Terland having charged down Keating’s attempted clearance.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce just managed to turn away an effort from Mary Fowler with City fighting hard to get back into the game.

Chelsea ran out 5-0 winners at West Ham to move seven points clear of Arsenal and Manchester United at the top of the table.

Catarina Macário fired the Blues in front and they were two goals to the good after 21 minutes, when Erin Cuthbert struck from outside the box. It was 3-0 close to half-time, when Agnes Beever-Jones also found the net from distance.

Sandy Baltimore was the fourth player on the scoresheet for Chelsea, an own-goal followed by the Hammers’ Amber Tysiak.

Arsenal put five past Crystal Palace to go second on goal-difference. Leah Williamson got Arsenal ahead very early on, with a close-range finish from Katie McCabe’s corner.

Alessia Russo scored the Gunners’ second after the hour mark, then soon set up Beth Mead for the third. Caitlin Foord won a penalty which was converted by Mariona Caldentey, who added her second in stoppage time.

Tottenham Hotspur edged Leicester City with an early own-goal. Maite Oroz played in Amanda Nilden for an angled effort which went in off the leg of keeper Janina Leitzig.

Nicole Cayman could not get her feet sorted out for what would have been a tap-in for the Foxes, Leitzig kept out a Martha Thomas cross-shot in the second half and Lize Kop saved from Leicester’s Missy Goodwin.

Beth England struck the underside of the City crossbar from 30 yards, then in added time a red card was shown to a member of the Leicester coaching staff.
