Kerstin Casparij and Vivianne Miedema’s Netherlands have bowed out of Euro 2025 following a 5-2 defeat to France.
The loss on Sunday evening, alongside England’s triumph over Wales, saw the Dutch finish third in Group D and in turn exit the competition.
Miedema, who made history for her nation last week when she bagged her 100th goal for the Netherlands, was an unused substitute, while Casparij featured for the entirety of the game at left-back.
Sandie Toletti put France - who started the day at the top of Group D - ahead on 22 minutes before a quick reply from Victoria Pelova levelled the playing field.
Fortune fell kindly for the Netherlands as they continued to look the better side, with a Selma Bacha own goal earning them the lead at half-time.
England's win over Wales meant the Dutch needed an emphatic victory to make the last eight, but second half goals from Marie-Antionette Katoto and Estelle Cascarino saw France flip the narrative.
They were awarded then a penalty in added time after Casparij brought down Melween N’Dongala.
Sakina Karchaoui converted from the spot to confirm the 2017 Euros winners would not reach the quarter-finals.
