Gianluigi Donnarumma has penned a touching message to the PSG fans addressing the transfer speculation surrounding his future at the club, effectively confirming his exit.
The goalkeeper was excluded from the squad that travelled to Udine for Wednesday night’s UEFA Super Cup clash with Tottenham Hotspur after being frozen out of training sessions.
PSG are looking to sell the 26-year-old after failing to agree on a new contract. His current terms expire next summer, at which point he could leave the club on a free transfer.
Manchester City are reportedly in talks with the Parisian outfit about a potential deal, while Chelsea and Manchester United have also been linked. The Blues are, however, “not in the race” for his signature, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Donnarumma addressed his situation in a post on his social media accounts, claiming that “someone” has decided he can no longer be a part of the team, before thanking the PSG fans and his teammates for their support.
“To the special Paris fans, from the first day I arrived, I gave everything – on and off the pitch – to earn my place and defend the goal of Paris Saint-Germain,” he wrote.
“Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success. I am disappointed and disheartened.
“I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it.
“I will always carry with me the memory of all the emotions, the magical nights, and of you, who made me feel at home.
“To my teammates – my second family – thank you for every battle, every laugh, every moment we shared. You will always be my brothers.
“Playing for this club and living in this city has been an immense honour. Thank you, Paris.”
PSG boss Luis Enrique also addressed the situation ahead of the Spurs game, saying that “the decision has to do with the profile of the goalkeeper” after they signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille.
When asked about Donnarumma’s future, he said: “We are talking about not only one of the best goalkeepers in the world but also about a wonderful person.”
Enrique continued: “The life of a top-level footballer, and the same goes for us coaches, is this: it wasn’t an easy decision but I take full responsibility for it. On the other hand, if these choices were easy, anyone could make them.”
