Graeme Souness believes Liam Delap will be a good signing for Chelsea but warned the striker he needs to improve his finishing.
Chelsea reached an agreement on Thursday for a £30m deal with Ipswich for the 22-year-old, and Delap will undergo his medical on Monday.
The Blues beat Manchester United and Newcastle to Delap’s signature and Enzo Maresca will be reunited with a player he worked with at the Manchester City academy.
Chelsea will be delighted to have secured their first summer signing , and the Blues are expected to ask Delap to be part of the squad for the Club World Cup rather than represent England at the European under-21 Championships.
Delap will provide Chelsea with a much needed alternative to Nicolas Jackson and give the Blues a presence in the box which the Senegal international lacks.

It will obviously be a big step up from Ipswich to Chelsea, but Souness believes Delap is a good signing, but warned he must improve his finishing.
“Liam Delap will be a good acquisition,” he told The Daily Mail.
“He has scored goals in an Ipswich Town side that has been scrapping throughout the season, and I believe he can make that jump to play at the top level with a big club, but he does have to become more clinical in his finishing.
“I think he has been educated in the correct way, and having experience on loan in the Championship was a strong part of his development. He will appreciate the opportunity he has to make a name for himself.”
Delap impressed in his debut Premier League campaign with 12 league goals and all eyes will be on him next season.
Delap might not be the only striker arriving at Stamford bridge this summer and the Blues have continued to be linked with Hugo Ekitike.
