Twelve months ago, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig were in a heated transfer saga, with the ultimate goal of obtaining the signature of Xavi Simons.
In the end, the Dutchman elected to sign for Die Roten Bullen, being forced to watch Bayern reclaim the Meisterschale while Leipzig underwhelmed, missing out on European football entirely.
While this was considered a disaster for Leipzig, there was always the possibility that they could cash in on Simons to recoup their lost finances from failing to qualify for European competition.
Nevertheless, as reported by Bild, Die Roten Bullen are yet to receive a proposal for the Dutch international, but why is this the case?
Despite a number of Premier League sides holding interest in Simons, an inquiry for his services has yet to be made.
Newcastle United have recently expressed an interest in the 22-year-old; however, the attacking midfielder is not keen on a move to the North-East of England.
It is understood that Simons is dreaming of a return to Barcelona – where he trained in their esteemed academy – but with the Catalonian outfit prioritising a deal for Nico Williams, it is unclear whether they will or want to make a move for the Dutchman.
As well as this, Simons has recently been being advised by his brother, and as stated in the report, he may need to seek help from his former agent, Darren Dein, should he look to secure a move this summer.
Bild are also reporting that Simons has proved to be a difficult character in the Leipzig dressing room this season.
With cliques forming at the club, the 22-year-old has been at the centre of these issues.
This has furthered Leipzig’s ambition to offload Simons, but it could also be a reason why the Dutch international has yet to receive an offer from elsewhere.
Therefore, with two months of the window remaining, Leipzig are stuck with a player they do not want, but also a player that no other side in Europe is keen to take from them.
While Simons has undeniable potential, personal issues and inconsistencies on the pitch are stalling his career from taking off.
