Davide Calabria’s departure has more been a question of when not if for large parts of the 2024/25 Serie A season, and AC Milan are set to part with the defender today.
With Milan’s plans to upgrade the squad as a whole, the underperforming Calabria was an almost guaranteed departure, and with Emerson Royal joining the club in the summer, his position dropped. Kyle Walker’s addition in January has also further impacted his rank.
So with playing time probably difficult to come by for the rest of the season, and no interest in a contract renewal, a move in January seemed like a growing possibility, and today, the final steps seem likely to be made.
Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Bologna are ‘very close’ to a deal with the Rossoneri captain, and the deal could be closed today. However, the two clubs are still deciding on the compensation fee to allow Calabria to leave his contract early.
Speaking to Sky last night, Di Marzio stated that the Diavolo will not look to replace him, and Milan News have relayed his comments.
“Tomorrow [Saturday, February 1] Bologna and Milan will meet again to define the compensation that will go to Milan for Calabria’s immediate transfer to Bologna. I can add that Calabria will not be replaced: in Milan’s ideas on the right flank there will be Walker and Jimenez.”
