A busy day of Pokal action ended with three ties decided by the regular 90 minutes.
Sandro Wagner’s first Augsburg test was a tricky trip to fourth-tier side Hallescher. The former Bayern Munich striker opted for a traditional 4-4-2 formation, and he got the win thanks to goals from his forwards.
Steve Mounié opened the deadlock early in the second-half before substitute Samuel Essende, who replaced Phillip Tietz, confirmed the victory ten minutes before the end. New signings Robin Fellhauer and Elias Saad recorded assists on their debut appearances for the Bavarians.
Ulm and Elversberg were in the same division last term, but they had indifferent campaigns. While the former suffered immediate relegation to 3. Liga, Elversberg were minutes away from a surprise Bundesliga promotion.
On Sunday, there was nothing between the two teams for a long spell, however. That was until Elversberg’s new right-back Felix Keidel scored what would be the winner in ten minutes after coming on as a substitute. Elversberg will now hope to progress beyond the second round of the DFB-Pokal for the first time in the club’s history.
Holstein Kiel faced a challenging task in Saarland, but they eventually secured their first win of the season. Marcel Rapp’s side lost their first two games on their return to 2. Bundesliga. USMNT hopeful John Tolkin and Swedish winger Alexander Bernhardsson scored the goals for last season’s Bundesliga debutants.
