The American forward is officially a Derby player after a $10 million deal was agreed.

Patrick Agyemang was officially unveiled on Tuesday as Derby County's latest recruit.

The Rams' move for the American forward had been in the works for a few weeks before it was confirmed that he had arrived at Pride Park.

Derby agreed a deal with Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC that was reported to be worth up to $10 million (around £7.5 million). The 24-year-old has signed a four-year deal.

Dean Smith, the former Norwich City and Aston Villa boss who is currently in charge of Agyemang's former team, made it clear that he didn't want to see the forward leave this summer.

In the statement released by Charlotte that confirmed the attacker's departure, it was made clear why they chose to sell.

Key detail in Derby's Patrick Agyemang purchase confirmed

The MLS club have said that not only did they receive a "club-record fee" for Agyemang, they retain a sell-on clause as part of the deal with Derby too.

"Patrick’s rise over the past 18 months put him on the radar of many clubs across Europe, and ultimately Derby County’s offer convinced the club and player to reach an agreement," said their general manager, Zoran Krneta.

"To get a deal done it needs to be in the best interest of the club first and foremost, but also of the player and in this case, it achieves both. He becomes the first player in our club’s history to come through our player pathway and be sold in a multi-million-dollar transfer.

"Patrick is a top professional and has earned this opportunity through his hard work and dedication on the training pitch since coming to Charlotte FC.

"Everyone at the Club wishes him the best of luck at Derby County, with the United States Men’s National Team as they build to the World Cup, and throughout the rest of his career."

The Rams were able to beat Ipswich Town, who were in the Premier League last season, to the American striker's signature. They were reported by FLW's sister publication GiveMeSport to be keen on the Charlotte player.

He scored twice in six appearances for his country in the recent CONCACAF Gold Cup. Agyemang also netted six times in the 2025 MLS campaign.

Derby had to take vital striker transfer action this summer

Derby supporters will have to wait to see him a bit longer than they would ideally like to see Agyemang in action, though, as County confirmed that he has a hernia problem which will require surgery to take care of it. This means that he is likely to miss the start of the season.

Luckily for them, they have already signed a very well-proven and experienced number nine for the level in Carlton Morris. He should more than easily be able to carry the load up front while Agyemang recovers from his operation.

Centre-forward was an area that John Eustace had to address this summer. Their top scorer from last season, and the only player to hit double-digits in this category, Jerry Yates, has returned to Swansea City following the expiration of his loan deal.

Without Yates, the demand for more of a threat in front of goal was hugely increased, but Derby will be confident that the combination of Morris and their latest addition will be able to help provide the finishing touches that they were lacking last season.
