Dane Murray has signed a new contract extension with the Hoops that will see the 22-year-old remain with the club until June 2028.
The new deal for the 6’4” defender is the latest rung in the ladder of his player pathway that started when he was only six-years-old as he began in the Celtic Junior Academy.
It also signifies the determination of the player who, soon after making his first-team debut by playing in both legs of a UEFA Champions League tie against FC Midtylland in 2021 at 18-years-old, suffered injuries that would have tested even the most resolute of professionals.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said: "Dane is a young player I have really enjoyed working with and is someone who has really developed well across the past few seasons.
"I know there is so much more to come from him and I believe he can have a really successful future with us.
"He has a brilliant attitude to the game and is great team-mate within our squad. He is very deserving of this new contract and I am delighted for him."
Speaking to Celtic TV, Dane Murray said: "I’m just excited and really looking forward to the future.
"Pre-season has been really good and I’ve really enjoyed every minute of it.
“For the team as well it was good, there were some really top-level games in there with top opposition.
"All the boys have been great with me since I’ve trained with the first-team and then become part of the squad.
“Everyone’s helped me a lot along the way, so you see the standards that they drive every day and the demands that are put upon them from the manager and the staff. Just learning from them every day can only help me.”
The new contract also brings with it new goals, both immediate for this season and for the long-term future.
Dane Murray said: “For me it’s that when I’m called upon, making sure that I’m ready to play the games that are needed.
'And ultimately it’s just winning as many trophies as possible. That’s what you want to do as a player and especially as a player at this club.'
“That’s the demands which are put upon you, to win trophies, so hopefully we can get as many as we can.”
The knee injury he suffered in 2022 postponed his initial plans, but now he is right back on track and that was helped by a loan spell at Queen’s Park last term – cut short when Celtic called him back in January.
“In a weird way it probably helped me," he explained. "It was a time when I did my cruciate twice, so it’s been a long journey and I spent two years out of football.
“It was hard and challenging, but think it’s helped me be who I am today. It’s not a good thing to happen, but I can look back at it in a positive light almost. So it’s one of those ones you just take in your stride and get on with it.
“I tried not to think about it too much but there were probably some nights when I thought, ‘Will I be able to get back to the level where I was before, would I be able to get better?’, but now I’m just really happy at signing a new contract.”
Just as happy are his parents and family, and the youngster said of their input to his career: “It’s massive, they’ve really helped me along every step of the way.
“From when I was a young boy, my Mum and Dad took me to training and all of the games around the country.
“I think’s it’s a proud moment for me but it’s a really proud moment for them as well.”
