De Siervo: ‘Serie A strength is unpredictability’ compared to Premier League

Lega Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo feels that the unpredictability of the Scudetto race is a great draw, compared to the ‘usual’ leaders in the Premier League, LaLiga and Bundesliga.

The last five Serie A titles have been won by four different clubs, a run that is practically unheard of in Europe’s top five divisions.

It was this point that De Siervo wanted to hammer home when talking about the 2 million who tuned in to the dramatic Derby della Madonnina in Italy alone.

“The excellent television viewing figures for the most recent round reflect the great interest towards our league, as so far this season there is a very balanced table that allows all the fans to dream,” said the CEO.

“If I look at the Premier League, at LaLiga and the Bundesliga, the usual suspects are already at the top of the table, the same ones who for years have won the titles, whereas our leaders weren’t even in the top eight last season.

“This is the strength of Serie A compared to the other leagues, we have a more tactical tournament and therefore hard-fought. All viewers appreciate this uncertainty in terms of results, filling the stadiums and watching the games on television.”

Serie A wide open compared to other big leagues

On the other hand, six of the last seven Premier League titles have been won by Manchester City and Pep Guardiola.

The last time a club other than Real Madrid, Barcelona or Atletico Madrid won LaLiga was Valencia in 2003-04.

So far this season, Torino are the surprise Serie A leaders on 11 points after five rounds, followed by Napoli and Udinese on 10.

Juventus are level with Empoli on nine, then Inter and Milan together on eight points.
