Crystal Palace’s No1 is yet to feature in the FA Cup this season
Dean Henderson will start in goal for Crystal Palace in Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham.
The 28-year-old didn’t get on the pitch in either of England’s first two matches under Thomas Tuchel over the past week, with Jordan Pickford preferred, but Henderson remains Palace’s No1 and will start at Craven Cottage as the Eagles seek to reach a first FA Cup semi-final since 2022.
Oliver Glasner has previously rested Henderson in all three previous rounds of the competition, with understudy goalkeeper Matt Turner, on loan from Nottingham Forest, starting against Stockport, Doncaster and Millwall.
But with Palace eyeing a spot in the last four, Glasner has decided to select his first-choice shot-stopper between the sticks.
“I talked to both goalkeepers, to him and to Dean, today,” Glasner said. “I took a decision. Dean will start tomorrow.
“It was a tough decision, and also it was a very good decision for me to take, because I’m choosing between two great goalkeepers who everybody has 100 per cent confidence in. They have the trust of us.
“But I decided that Dean is our No1, played most of the games, and that’s why I decided [he will start].
“We haven’t had a game now for three weeks. I don’t want to change this. That’s why he will start tomorrow.”
Glasner was asked how United States international Turner took the news, given he may have been expecting to get the nod in another cup fixture.
“Very professionally,” Glasner explained. “I talked to him two or three times this week, because I was undecided for a long time. It’s the best situation you can have: to choose between two players who are in form and of a very top level.
“He accepted it. I know we can rely on him whenever we need him. He’s a great guy, a fantastic guy. He didn’t say ‘Thank you, gaffer’, but he took it very professionally and that is what we expect.”
