Very interesting to see what Crystal Palace fans have said, both before AND after the 5-0 thrashing their team suffered at St James’ Park.

This Newcastle United match saw two form teams meeting.

United having won their last five matches in a row in all competitions, whilst Palace had won six of their last eight games in all competitions.

Crystal Palace fans saw their team hammered 4-0 last season at St James’ Park and the last four visits had seen Eddie Howe’s side win three and draw one, indeed, it is (still!!) over four years since Palace last scored at St James’ Park.

Crystal Palace fans commenting before AND after the 5-0 thrashing by Newcastle United on their Holmesdale message board:

PRE-MATCH

‘We need to get back to our old defensive ways – or judging by the way Newcastle are taking [Man] United apart it won’t be a pleasant night on Wednesday.

Optimistically I think we will and scrape a 1-1.’

‘Glasner won’t make the same errors [as he did against Man City].

Draw.’

‘Newcastle are very physical and it has getting a few injuries all over it kind of game and loosing 2-0.

They would rather kick Ezes legs out of it than let him do his normal glide past players.’

‘Newcastle were one of the worst performances against us I’ve seen all season.

They had no attempts at goal, I believe. But Guehi scored for them.

We had dozens of half chances and maybe 2-3 gilt edged chances we didn’t take.

They were on the back of a European game and Isak had a knock, in mitigation to them. I think he came off quick enough and Gordon was awful up front.

They got away with quite a bit – although at home we were reffed like an away team. Something we must be used to by now.’

‘Providing they don’t come off the starting blocks like rottweilers sensing blood, then we’ve got a chance.

I’m hoping for a bit of complacency, a bit less energy on their part. But we must be at our best.

If so 2-0 to us, JP and Franca (or Eze penalty). And pray no injuries or red cards.’

‘They battered Man United today , but then again so did we when we played them .

I think it all depends if Kamada is playing . If he is we wont win as its like playing with 10 men . If he’s not playing i reckon we will grab a narrow win.’

‘As much as I want to be confident, ours and Newcastle’s games this weekend makes that very tough, although with our back 3 and hopefully Hughes back in, we’ll put up a good fight. 2-1 Newcastle, Sarr on the scoresheet for us.’

‘They didn’t do a thing at Selhurst and we owned them last season under Oli.

Into them.’

We’ll get a point.’

‘Interesting to see if we have the tactics, ability, balls to give Newcastle a game.’

‘I’m going to say a good old 0-0 draw. Been ages since we’ve had one of those, and we were previously addicted to them like crack.’

‘I think OG will want a clean sheet… a dull game with an Eddie counter attack goal and Devenney and franca playing. 0-1 Palace.’

‘An extra days rest and the return of Guehi and Nketiah should give us something to be positive about, but no doubt this will be a tough game given Newcastle’s form. I think this could be an entertaining one. 2-2.’

‘Eddie Howe recovering from pneumonia, hoping he will be ok.

Our squad should be stronger, I think we could grab a point 2-2.’

‘Our record away to them hasn’t been great over last few years

I will be happy with a draw.’

‘In the reverse fixture Newcastle were shocking and it took a Munoz last minute goal to rescue a point for us . Have a feeling the game will pan out the same way so some sort of draw!’

‘Make or break for our chances of getting into Europe via the league and overhauling Brighton I think. Win and we’re just 2 points behind so it’s still do-able. 5 points may be too much.

Guehi back and Hughes back, I think we’ll beat them. 3-1.’

‘A loss. Newcastle are currently in hot form.’

POST-MATCH

‘As Glasner said after the Newcastle game, sometimes you just have to throw these isolated results in the bin and move on.’

‘A season during which there have been some great moments. Huge strides have been made under the present manager. But we are still behind Brentford, Fulham, Bournemouth, and certainly Brighton. Beyond that, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Newcastle and Liverpool can put five past you.’

‘Newcastle are on a real high since they won the Carabao Cup and last night they were simply too good for us.’

‘No surprise as both Man City and Newcastle are funded by oil rich nations not individuals, its never a level playing field. Newcastle never got near Europe or winning a trophy, when Ashley owned them and run the club as a business, now they are used for sports washing dirty money.’

‘Unfortunately the Ant and Dec of this world can’t ( won’t) see it.’

‘We were overcome by a team currently playing at the top of their game. But not before we had opportunities of our own that weren’t taken largely due to poor decision making in their final third. And then the unexpected, and by then undeserved lifeline of the penalty, duly missed and 90 seconds later we concede again.

Newcastles way of playing is known to everyone but we made it easy for them.’

‘If they’d kept their foot on the gas they could have scored a few more.

I felt sorry for Henderson with that in front of him. Nowhere to hide.’

‘We have to face the facts we are at best mid table team and at worst on this form future relegation contenders, talk of Europe is just a pipe dream. Both MC and Newcastle exploited our weaknesses which is lack of pace at the back, inability to deal with crosses to the far post, poor passing from defensive positions in to midfield and beyond, our lack of ideas and intensity in the final third is also of great concern.’

‘If we could have extended our recent, excellent form away to City and a bang in form Newcastle, then maybe a push into a European place wouldn’t be out of the question.’

‘Ultimately Newcastle were explosive in their transition (much like we were in the first 20 mins vs City), and we were laboured.’

‘I’m not being Professor Hindsight but we were always going to lose tonight, and if we get anything at Arsenal next week I’ll be amazed, and this is from Professor Foresight. My only gripe, cos these things happen, is that we currently need to rotate the squad a bit more.’

‘Rotation has nothing to do with our performance. Newcastle fielded the same 11 for 6th game running, they didnt look fatigued and we made 2 changes. The issue is fielding a back 3 and midfield 2 against a lone striker and midfield 3, Lerma and Hughes were chasing shadows.’

‘Bournemouth may not have the stellar names of City and Newcastle , but they have plenty of pace down the sides in Semenyo and and Outtara , a dangerous striker in Evanilson and play 3 in midfield and overlapping full backs.

Like Newcastle, will they get in behind us down the sides and outnumber and outplay us in midfield?’

‘The additional man in the Newcastle midfield continually sucked in one of our centre half’s whatever side they were attacking such that their wingers/overlapping backs found acres of space once our own overlapping wingbacks were caught out of position.

Yes, our cause wasn’t helped by individual defensive errors however we were exposed by a formation that was ripping apart our own. This was not difficult to see.’

‘How come Newcastle were Playing ‘glad all over’ at the end of the game?

They’d already taken the p.ss for 90 minutes.
