Tomorrow’s Serie A match against Lazio promises to be a “trial by fire” for Inter Milan as injuries have strained their squad.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.
Over the coming matches, Inter will have the chance to rotate their squad.
After tomorrow’s Serie A clash with Lazio, the Nerazzurri face Udinese in the Coppa Italia. And then, there are league fixtures against Como and Cagliari on the way.
Of course, Inter will not underestimate any of these teams or matches.
But the Coppa round of sixteen is a match where it’s hardly uncommon for big teams to play with rotated teams.
And then in Serie A, the Nerazzurri have a couple of teams in the relegation battle on the way.
Tomorrow, however, there will be no sense that Inter are able to take their foot off the gas.
Lazio are direct rivals for the title. That is certain with the two teams going into the match level on points, albeit with Inter having a game in hand.
Moreover, the Biancocelesti are in absolutely blazing form. Recent wins against Napoli and Ajax have given them more confidence than ever.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will feel that he has no choice but to play his strongest team.
That will mean that players like Nicolo Barella, Federico Dimarco, and Lautaro Martinez come back into the team after being absent against Bayer Leverkusen in midfield.
These players will feel the pressure to play at their absolute best.
In defense, though, Inzaghi will have few choices. Injuries to Benjamin Pavard and Francesco Acerbi will force the coach’s hand.
The Nerazzurri will have to rely on the same back three that started against Leverkusen in all likelihood.
And the hope will be that it can hold on at its best for one match longer. The difficulty of the opponent and the threat of exhaustion will make it a real “trial by fire” though.
