Coventry City's firepower means they are a genuine threat in the battle for promotion to the Premier League.

When Coventry City replaced club legend Mark Robins with Frank Lampard, it was a bold decision that many observers questioned.

Fast-forward four months, and it has looked like an inspired call from owner Doug King, with Lampard having made the instant impact he would’ve been dreaming about.

With eight games to go, the Sky Blues occupy a play-off place, and whilst daunting fixtures against Sheffield United and Burnley loom, there will be a belief among Lampard’s men that they can win promotion.

Coventry City are flying under Frank Lampard

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this run for Coventry fans is that it doesn’t seem like it’s a flash in the pan.

Lampard has been in charge for 21 league games now, which is almost half a season, and in that time they have picked up 42 points. If you extrapolate that over a full campaign, Coventry would be in the hunt for a top two finish.

So, it’s not like they are enjoying a purple patch with a few narrow wins, rather that they’ve been consistent for a matter of months.

Furthermore, in this period, Lampard’s side have come up against almost everything the Championship has to offer, and the side have adapted to show different sides of their game to get results.

Only Leeds United are scoring more than Coventry City right now

When you break things down further, it’s clear that Coventry’s success has been built on their attacking talent.

Over the past ten games, the Midlands outfit have found the net 18 times, a tally that only Leeds United (23) can beat. It’s the same story if you go back 15 and 20 games.

So, once again, this isn’t a small sample size, with Coventry emerging as the second highest scorers over the past few months - which Lampard deserves huge credit for.

He inherited a squad that looked to have a lot of talent in the final third. With Brandon Thomas-Asante, Ellis Simms, Haji Wright and Norman Bassette on their books, there’s an argument to say Coventry has a depth of strikers that is among the best in the league.

Lampard tapped into that, with Simms improving under the former Chelsea chief, and Haji Wright’s superb hat-trick against Sunderland last time out was a reminder of his ability.

That was only the USA international’s fourth appearance under Lampard because of injury, so the new boss has got a goalscoring tune out of the team without the man who many consider to be the best player at the club.

Frank Lampard can lead Coventry City to promotion

Ultimately, Lampard deserves all the praise for this turnaround at Coventry.

Yes, he took over a squad stacked with quality, but he quickly instilled confidence and belief into the group, particularly those attacking players.

Some tactical tweaks have helped too, as it was especially noticeable with Jack Rudoni that midfield players are given more license to get into the box, with the ex-Huddersfield man becoming a real goal threat as well prior to his injury.

The next two games at Bramall Lane and then at home to Burnley will be a real marker for Lampard’s men, and measure the progress they have made.

But, irrespective of the result, they will go into the fixtures confident of winning, because the stats show Coventry have the firepower to harm anyone in this league.
