Coventry City have a sell-on clause if Viktor Gyokeres leaves Sporting CP, but a recent development may benefit three promotion rivals

Coventry City's sale of star striker Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting CP 12 months ago still lives long in the memory, which can be attributed to the player's influence in the Championship and subsequent career elevation alongside the future financial rewards included in the deal.

There had been an understandable element of skepticism when Mark Robins brokered a transfer agreement with Brighton and Hove Albion to secure Gyokeres' services on a permanent basis in July 2021 following a six-month loan stay which yielded just three goals from 19 appearances.

Such doubts were equally fueled by the Swedish forward's miserable time with Swansea City earlier on in the 2020/21 campaign, where he routinely cut a frustrated figure and failed to score a single Championship goal in 11 matches.

Coventry, though, instantly saw vindication as Gyokeres transformed into one of the division's most potent marksmen, instantly repaying their cautioned show of faith with 17 goals and five assists in his first full season in the West Midlands before ascending to an even higher echelon the following year.

Former doubters were no longer able to compose doubts over Coventry's investment when Gyokeres scored 21 league goals and set up a further 12 to drag the Sky Blues all the way to an improbable Championship play-off final showdown with Luton, where they were denied of a prized Premier League return on penalty kicks but had ultimately, and optimally, reaped the rewards of entrusting the ex-Brighton frontman.

But with Coventry conclusively falling a fraction short of bringing top-flight football to the Ricoh Arena for the first time in its history, the reality of Gyokeres' departure became something of an inevitability as Portuguese giants Sporting CP eventually won the hotly-contested race for his signature.

Coventry City's Viktor Gyokeres has transformed into a superstar at Sporting CP

The Lisbon outfit forked out a fee of £21 million (including add-ons) to bring Gyokeres to Portugal, and it had appeared a smart investment at the time, particularly given the degree of Premier League interest that they successfully fought off.

And, just as Coventry did themselves three years prior, Sporting saw an immediate reward with Gyokeres scoring 43 times across all competitions and helping them regain their Liga Portugal crown.

Such displays have unsurprisingly caught the captivation of Europe's elite, with reported interest emerging from both Arsenal and Chelsea following a sensational debut campaign in the Portuguese capital.

Gyokeres is believed to have an £86 million release clause in his contract, after Coventry struck an agreement to gain 10% of any profit that Sporting seek to make from a future sale - which would see them gain £6.5m if that clause is met.

Understandably so, Sky Blues supporters had been keeping their fingers crossed for a transfer this summer given the enticing cash windfall at play, but it's now reported that Gyokeres will be staying put for next season and is set to be in line for a new deal as a result.

Leeds United, Burnley and Luton Town will all benefit from the latest Viktor Gyokeres transfer update

Losing out on upwards of £6.5 million will undoubtedly add further difficulty to Coventry's likely designs of finally achieving promotion next term while easing those same ambitions held by their potential top-end competitors in Leeds United, Burnley and Luton Town.

Akin to Coventry, Leeds endured the same fate of heartbreak at Wembley back in May, whereas Burnley and Luton will both be vying to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking after both suffering immediate relegation last time out.

Coventry finished in ninth position last season but appear better-placed to launch a promotion charge next term, with Gyokeres' replacements Ellis Simms and Haji Wright both unlocking their form as last season grew on, while the addition of Jack Rudoni from Huddersfield represents a significant boost to their aspirations of promotion - but perhaps not more than a £6.5m bonus would.

However, Gyokeres' immediate future will be a plus point for the trio - alongside any other promotion hopefuls, of course - as their rivals will not have that money to spend, putting them in a weaker position as a result.

Of course, Coventry are ambitious and have showed that with the big money capture of Rudoni, as well as landing fleet-footed Peterborough United winger Ephron Mason-Clark, but they don't have the finances of clubs such as the Clarets, the Hatters and Daniel Farke's Leeds.

There will be a time when Coventry reap the rewards of Gyokeres once again, but thankfully for Leeds, Burnley and Luton, that time won't be coming just yet.
