Hosts Ecuador have fought hard and won their first game of their Copa América 2025 campaign. They won 3-1 against Peru, redeeming their previous 2-2 draw against Uruguay. Meanwhile, Argentina started their tournament with a slim 1-0 win.
We’ve unpacked the latest action from Copa América.
Peru started the game in a 4-2-3-1 formation against the 4-4-2 formation of Ecuador.
Both teams were doing well in possession of the ball, and that led to the 0-1 scored by Ecuador in the 16th minute by Arias. She escaped offside and slotted it home in the bottom left corner. Ecuador managed to double the lead in the 42nd minute. Bolaños made sure the home nation could cheer again. A penalty was given after Pesantez was fouled, and Bolaños didn’t miss: 0-2.
In the second half, Ecuador kept creating more high-quality chances than Peru, even though they both had 16 shots. Flores hit the post. Just after that, Peru managed to be clinical for once and scored a goal.
Quite unexpected, but Peru scored from the edge of the penalty area after a cross from the right. This meant that the rest of the game was pretty open. But in the end, it was Ecuador that managed to seal the three points with a goal in the 94th minute by Moreira.
Argentina started their campaign with a game against Uruguay. The game ended 1-0 for Argentina, and there weren’t many high-quality chances, but Argentina were dominant in the final third of the pitch. They utilised their 4-4-2 better than Uruguay did and that resulted in the win.
The 1-0 was scored by Bonsegundo in the 76th minute of the game. The ball dropped in front of her feet, and she lobbed the exiting goalkeeper skillfully. It was a tasty affair with good match-ups, but as before in this tournament, Argentina proved to be more clinical in attack.
