Chelsea are one step away from completing another important summer transfer.
It doesn’t bring in a lot of money, but it does clear one long-standing issue from the books.
Kepa Arrizabalaga closes in on a move to Arsenal according to Fabrizio Romano.
Kepa Arrizabalaga has been one of the defining transfers of the last ten years for Chelsea, coming in for £72m and quickly proving a disaster. The amount of money invested in him meant he was given far too much rope, and has also made him very difficult to sell since.
Finally, his value has sunk to the point where he has a taker, however. After a season on loan with Bournemouth where he showed he can still be a Premier League keeper, Arsenal have decided to trigger his £5m release clause and bring him in as David Raya’s backup for next season.
Fabrizio Romano has just announced that the goalkeeper has completed a medical and “formal steps will now follow,” which seems to indicate the transfer is close to being announced.
Chelsea’s own goalkeeper situation remains unclear – so far it looks like Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen will compete to be number one next season, despite strong links with Mike Maignan and Djordje Petrovic’s strong season on loan at Strasbourg.
One thing is for sure – Kepa isn’t in the picture anymore. Finally, after almost a decade, we can tick that troublesome issue off the list. Let’s hope to not get ourselves into a similar situation again. Those upstairs at the club are different to those who made the mistake in the first place – but they can still learn from their predecessors’ error.
