Colombia can clinch a Copa America quarter-final berth with a victory over Costa Rica at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on Friday.

Los Cafeteros’ dream of winning their second continental title began positively with a 2-1 win over Paraguay in Houston.

But any notion that taking another three points from this clash will be a formality has been ruled out after the Ticos dug in for a 0-0 draw against Brazil.

Mitchell and Sequeira star in Brazil shutout

Colombia’s victory over Paraguay extended their winning streak to nine but it was not as convincing a win as it looked like it was going to be when they went 2-0 up before half-time.

James Rodriguez created both goals with superb crosses, his first from open play finding an unmarked Daniel Munoz and his second from a free-kick converted by another Crystal Palace man — Jefferson Lerma.

It was not all plain sailing for Nestor Lorenzo’s men, who lost Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi to injury midway through the first half.

Yerry Mina looked cumbersome when he came on and Paraguay were the better side after the break, finishing the contest with a higher corner and shot count than Colombia.

But Brazil’s draw with Costa Rica means Colombia are alone at the top of Group D on three points and will confirm a place in the knockout phase with victory over the Ticos.

The Concacaf representatives did themselves proud with a backs-to-the-wall display against the five-time world champions.

Brazil dominated the game and wasted several chances to break the deadlock, but could not find a goal despite recording 19 shots to Costa Rica’s two at SoFi Stadium.

Young defender Jeyland Mitchell did an excellent job of shackling Vinicius Junior and goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira made three important saves.

A fourth consecutive clean sheet for Gustavo Alfaro’s side shows where the strength of Costa Rica’s squad lies, but Brazil also had an effort by Marquinhos disallowed in the first half after a lengthy VAR check.

Colombia vs Costa Rica team news

Lorenzo will be forced into at least one change with centre-back Lucumi out after suffering an injury while blocking a Julio Enciso shot against Paraguay.

Mina replaced him after 25 minutes of that game and is the likely starter alongside Davinson Sanchez.

Lucumi is reported to have suffered a muscle injury in his left leg, but has not yet been ruled out of Colombia’s final group game against Brazil.

Costa Rica coach Alfaro has a full squad at his disposal after the federation confirmed that Jefferson Brenes had not suffered a concussion against Brazil.

That game saw the first use of the pink card at the Copa America when Alejandro Bran replaced Brenes in the 64th minute.
