CM: Why the ideal chance has presented itself to give Camarda more senior minutes

Francesco Camarda’s season with Milan Futuro is done, and that raises questions about possible first team involvement.

As Calciomercato.com write, Milan have some absences in attack given that Tammy Abraham will not be present against Genoa tonight due to muscle fatigue. With an eye on the Coppa Italia final on May 14, the game at the Marassi could have provided a chance for Camarda.

A stretched attack

Let’s start with an assumption: Milan have some slight issues in attack. As communicated during Sunday’s press conference by Sergio Conceicao, Abraham has suffered a physical problem and therefore will not be available.

He will be re-evaluated in the next 24 hours, to understand exactly what his condition is for the final rush. Luka Jovic recently returned to training with the rest of the team and could be preserved against Genoa, given the two games against Bologna that are coming up.

The Serbian centre-forward is the most congenial to Conceicao’s playing philosophy and will most likely act as the No.9 at the Stadio Olimpico for the final. With only Santiago Gimenez completely available, Camarda will be called up and will finish his season with the first team.

Season over with the Futuro

Camarda was supposed to be available to Massimo Oddo and Milan Futuro for the two relegation play-offs legs on 10 and 17 May against SPAL. The Rossoneri need to win on aggregate to keep their place in Serie C and avoid a very bitter inaugural campaign.

However, Camarda will not be able to be deployed, having not reached the minimum number of appearances in the regular season. Only those who have reached 25 appearances can be used, or 12 appearances if the player has been registered with the Serie A club only since 1 January 2025.

This is where the problem of the striker’s management becomes obvious. Camarda was often aggregated to the first team, especially with Paulo Fonseca as Milan coach, but played just a few scraps of matches despite 19 call-ups.

The former Futuro coach Daniele Bonera – from November onwards – was able to count on Camarda only on two occasions. That made it nearly impossible for him to reach the threshold even if he did get more chances towards the end of the season.

An obvious opportunity

Given that his season in Serie C can definitely be considered over, why not give Camarda space in Serie A in these last four games, allowing him to take a further step in his growth path?

This season, the 17-year-old has collected a total of 189 senior minutes, also making his debut as a starter in Cagliari thanks to Fonseca and also enjoying the joy of a historic goal in the Champions League in the match against Club Brugge (before VAR rules it out).

However, Camarda’s last appearance in Serie A dates back to February 22nd against Torino, and since then he has been called up by Conceicao on three other occasions (versus Bologna, Lazio and Udinese). Now could be the right time to earn minutes in the top flight.

The pressure on Milan has drastically lowered, the team’s morale has certainly improved after the last few outings (in particular, the derby won 3-0 and reaching the final of the Coppa Italia). These four league games, starting with the match against Genoa, represent the best scenario to give him a chance.
