GARETH TAYLOR PREVIEW

The boss said Laia Aleixandri and Naomi Layzell have both received ‘really good news’ on their respective recoveries from injury.

The defensive duo are still unavailable for City’s UEFA Women’s Champions League clash with Hammarby on Tuesday, but the extent of both their injuries is less significant than first feared.

He said: “They’re both working extremely hard, this game has come too soon for them but they’re not far away at all.

“Hopefully we can start getting that little bit of support for the players in the backline, we’re a bit stretched at the moment.

“That’s down to the intensity of the games and quality we’ve played, but you have to give great credit to the girls for how they’re handling it, the performances and results they’ve shown.”

Laura Coombs preview

“We’ve watched them quite a bit. They look extremely physical as Swedish teams do. We're expecting them to be direct and we’re preparing for that.

“Although they haven’t had a good result in the previous game, we don’t expect it to be easy and will prepare as much as we can.

“We feel really good and that is reflected in where we are in the league.

“We may be inexperienced in this competition, but in the squad we have World Cup finalists and Euros winners. [So there is] similar experience to draw on.”

LAST TIME OUT

City emphatically beat Spurs 4-0 in the Barclays Women’s Super League last time out as a Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw hat-trick and Jill Roord’s strike helped us to three points at the Etihad Stadium.

Meanwhile, in our last Champions League assignment, we came from behind to beat St Polten 3-2 in Vienna thanks to goals from Alanna Kennedy, Aoba Fujino and Mary Fowler.

PREVIOUS MEETING

Tuesday’s clash at the Joie Stadium represents the first meeting between City and Hammarby.

The Swedish side secured passage into the group stage after beating Benfica over two-legs and have since beat St Polten but lost to Barcelona so far in the competition.

They also have a familiar face within their ranks with ex-City midfielder Julie Blakstad a crucial player for Martin Sjogren’s side.

TV COVERAGE

The Champions League meeting will be broadcast live in the United Kingdom on DAZNUK.
