It’s transfer season, and that means plenty of interesting stuff to come from Matt Law on the London is Blue podcast.

One major topic for him yesterday was Joao Felix. The attacking midfielder is in limbo, having returned from a loan to AC Milan but not having been included in Chelsea’s Club World Cup squad.

Law pointed out that Felix likely would have been left out in any case as he’s not in Enzo Maresca’s plans – but also noted that it made it possible that the Portuguese could yet play for Benfica in the competition if a deal is done to take him back to his old club:

“I don’t think he’d have been part of the Club World Cup squad anyway, someone when they were telling me the rules on not being able to be registered for later in the competition if you’ve been registered for another club did point out that Benfica are in the Club World Cup and they have a strong interest in Felix,”

“Whether there’s a thought that it could even be done that fast [I’m not sure]. I think Benfica is the big hope for Chelsea and Felix.”

Felix is far from the only player sitting nervously wondering about his future.

Chelsea only took 28 players to the USA, meaning there are around ten more sitting around in England trying to figure out their futures. After the busy period in the buildup to the pre Club World Cup transfer window, we expect things to go quiet for a while now, with a host of sales likely to come in July when the tournament is over.
