Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist has completed his medical at West Brom and is set to join the Championship club for £2m plus add ons.
The report comes from Ben Jacobs, who adds that Chelsea have retained “a significant sell on clause.”
Nizaar Kinsella’s report for the BBC, however, says it’s a £1.2m rising to £2m with add ons.
Ben Jacobs’ Tweet confirming that Alfie Gilchrist has a significant sell on clause.
That sell on clause mentioned by Jacobs may explain the fee, which does seem very low, even for a Championship move. A Cobham trained kid, with Premier League and Championship experience already established, really feel like they should be going for £5m at least.
We had rather hoped that Gilchrist would go to join Frank Lampard at Coventry, but it seems that West Brom made the strongest move. We’re sure he will be a hit there. His all-action playing style will endear him to the fans there, and once he’s settled he should be a real asset for them as they look to battle for promotion.
We love Gilchrist, and we’re so happy he got some memorable moments in a Blue shirt before moving on – including scoring a goal. We’re sure we haven’t seen the last of him in the Premier League.
It’s little over a year since he won the Academy Player of the Year, and there are very few names on the list of the winners of that trophy who haven’t ended up with top flight success somewhere.
With the medical completed, we expect this deal to be announced by West Brom within the next 24 hours. His sale takes Chelsea to a record breaking £264.4m worth of player sales this summer.
