Chelsea made multiple enquiries to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan in the summer but were put off by the player’s €80m (£66.7m) asking price.

The West London side sought to sign a new first-choice goalkeeper in the summer after allowing Djordje Petrovic and Kepa Arrizabalaga to leave on loan.

Maignan featured high on the club’s list of targets but the Blues baulked at Milan’s valuation of the France international.

Corriere dello Sport are reporting that Chelsea made several enquiries for Maignan but were reluctant to meet the asking price placed on the player. The 28-year-old has established himself as one of Serie A’s top goalkeepers after signing for Milan from Lille in 2021.

He was named Serie A’s Best Goalkeeper after winning the Scudetto in his debut season at the San Siro and has replaced Hugo Lloris as number one for the French national team, following the latter’s retirement from international football.

After missing out on Maignan, Enzo Maresca has strarted the season with Robert Sanchez as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper in the Premier League. Chelsea also signed Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal in the summer for £20.7m, with the shot-stopper signing a seven-year contract.

Maresca has confirmed that Jorgensen will be the club’s cup goalkeeper this season and the 22-year-old has made three appearances across all competitions.
