While there are some important sales still to be made and some players who are still yet to be secured on the incoming side, by far the biggest deal is over Nicolas Jackson.
The striker’s situation is escalating quickly, and last night’s report from the Telegraph made it clear just how near to the wire this one could go. They claim that Jackson “favours a move to Newcastle,” meaning that suddenly his and Chelsea’s summer has become tied to the ongoing transfer saga which is seeing Liverpool try to sign Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.
Liverpool claim their £110m offer was their last, and Newcastle want £150m. The story should end there. But nobody quite believes either side of that equation. There’s still a strong sense a deal can be done, with Isak pushing so hard to go and the Magpies obviously not keen to keep an unhappy player around.
If Isak does go, it looks like the Magpies have lined up Jackson as their replacement. The 24 year old knows he’s been pushed down the pecking order at Chelsea and has accepted that being first choice in the North East is a pretty good alternative.
Chelsea also know they can get a good fee from a desperate Newcastle late in the window. They apparently want something close to the £52m they got for Noni Madueke. It does put us in a difficult position though, knowing we’re being dragged into a deadline day situation which isn’t of our own making.
