Chelsea depart for their Club World Cup adventure today, but that won’t change what’s going on at home.
Those in charge of making transfers will still be very focused on improving the areas of the team they need to – including central defence. A look at the list of defenders who have headed out to the USA is a reminder that there’s still no conclusion about who’s going to be Levi Colwill’s main partner next season.

Wesley Fofana has missed the tour to continue working on his rehab, another reminder that we can’t fall into the trap of relying on him.
A few options are already off the board, with Dean Huijsen taking his medical with Real Madrid last night. One player we’ve been linked to at the back is Ousmane Diomande, and while it’s never been that intense, as other players are ruled out, he rises up the list.
Portuguese paper O Jogo (who are well connected with Diomande’s club Sporting) today insist that both the Blues and Arsenal have serious interest, with Crystal Palace lurking too.
Given there’s been no movement on other targets, like Palace’s Marc Guehi, we’re increasingly inclined to believe that a move for Diomande could happen. He’s 21 and wouldn’t cost a crazy amount in transfer fee or wages, so he fits out model.
He’s got plenty of experience for his age, and seems to be highly rated with plenty of upside.
If we don’t see serious moves towards another defender, we can well believe that this deal is going to start moving forward, and the moment we hear Fabrizio Romano or one of the other top insiders mention it, we can get really switched on.
