Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca confirmed that Alejandro Garnacho is undergoing his medical ahead of completing his move from Manchester United in the summer transfer window.
The two clubs reportedly agreed on a £40 million fee for the winger on Thursday, which will be the fourth-biggest sale ever by United. The deal includes a 10 per cent sell-on fee.
Garnacho, who joined the Red Devils from Atletico Madrid as a 16-year-old in 2020, will sign a seven-year contract with Chelsea.
“I know he is around here,” Maresca said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s west London derby against Fulham.
“It’s quite clear his position is a winger and I see him as a winger,” the Italian explained when asked how Garnacho will fit into his team.
The Argentina international’s arrival could lead to some Chelsea players leaving before the transfer window closes, although Maresca gave nothing away on that front.
“You can expect anything with the transfer window open. Anything can happen in and out.
“I joined the club one year ago saying I was in love with the squad and it has got better. The feeling is the same.”
Christopher Nkunku’s impending move to AC Milan allowed Chelsea to move ahead with their pursuit of Garnacho, but Nicolas Jackson, Raheem Sterling, Tyrique George, Ben Chilwell, Axel Disasi and David Datro Fofana’s futures at the club remain uncertain.
Asked what will happen to these players if they do not secure a move before monday, Maresca admitted: “No idea, to be honest. I don’t know. They are not even with us, they are training at different times on different pitches. So I do not have any idea, I do not know.
“We will see when the window closes and we decide.”
