Chelsea have reportedly agreed to sell Christopher Nkunku to AC Milan in the summer transfer window, leaving Aston Villa disappointed.

The Midlands outfit had been linked with a move for the France international as they look to beef up their attack after failing to score in their opening two matches of the new Premier League campaign.

Nkunku has been searching for an exit from Stamford Bridge after playing a bit-part role in Enzo Maresca’s side last season. Despite being a regular starter in their successful UEFA Conference League campaign, just nine of his 27 top-flight appearances were starts.

Villa were among a number of clubs interested in signing the 27-year-old, along with Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and RB Leipzig, but they have been beaten to the punch by Milan.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea and the Italian giants have “verbally agreed” a deal in principle for Nkunku, which could be worth as much €42 million (£36m).

The initial transfer fee is said to be over €35m, with the rest made up of potential add-ons. The Athletic add that a sell-on clause has been included in the deal.

Nkunku has already agreed personal terms on a five-year contract with the Rossoneri and has been granted permission to travel for a medical.

Bayern had hoped to sign Nkunku on loan, but Chelsea were only interested in a permanent deal. A loan offer with an obligation to buy from the Bundesliga champions was turned down by the Blues.

The German giants, however, are still “pushing” for a deal to sign Nicolas Jackson, according to Romano. Chelsea “want to wait” until Alexander Isak’s future is settled before deciding on the “best option” for the striker, suggesting they are hoping a better deal will come close to Monday’s deadline.
