UEFA have confirmed the pots for this season’s Champions League ahead of the league phase draw in Monaco on Thursday.
For the first time ever six Premier League teams will compete in the competition after securing an extra qualification place via the European Performance Spots, while Tottenham Hotspur qualified through winning the Europa League.
The 36 participating teams have been split into four pots. Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City have been placed in Pot 1, Arsenal in Pot 2, Spurs in Pot 3, and Newcastle United reside in Pot 4.
Pot 1: PSG, Real Madrid, Man City, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona.
Pot 2: Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid, Benfica, Atalanta, Villarreal, Juventus, Eintracht Frankfurt, Club Brugge.
Pot 3: Tottenham, PSV, Ajax, Napoli, Sporting, Olympiacos, Slavia Prague, Bodo/Glimt, Marseille.
Pot 4: Copenhagen, Monaco, Galatasaray, Union Saint-Gilloise, Qarabag, Athletic Club, Newcastle, Pafos, Kairat.
The draw will be held in Monaco on Thursday, 28 August and begins at 5pm BST/6pm CET.
You can watch the draw for free on UEFA and TNT Sports’ YouTube channels.
All 36 teams will play eight matches in the league phase; these fixtures will be generated by automated software, which was used for the first time last year.
Starting with Pot 1, one physical ball will be drawn before the software draws their eight opponents. Each side will face two teams from each pot, one at home and the other away.
No clubs from the same association can face each other, meaning Premier League teams will be kept apart until the knockout stage, while no team can face more than two opponents from the same association.
This process repeats itself for all other teams until all pairings have been drawn. UEFA say the Champions League fixture list with match dates and kick-off times will be communicated no later than Saturday, 30 August.
