Genoa stun reigning champions with injury time penalty equaliser

Scorers: Vogliacco 20′ Messias 90+4 (PEN); Thuram 30′, 84′

Genoa held Inter to a 2-2 draw at the Marassi, thanks to an injury time penalty converted by Junior Messias.

Home side Genoa silenced the champions when a long free kick was launched into the box, and the looping header that met it was parried by Yann Sommer right into the path of Antonio Vogliaccio, who was first to the ball to poke home.

But it was not too long before Inter clicked into gear, and a crisp passing move allowed Nicolò Barella to whip in a cross with pace into the box, that only needed the lightest of touches from Marcus Thuram to find the back of the net.

From then onwards, the Nerazzurri dominated the chances, but as time ticked on it seemed like they may not get their just reward.

Then Thuram came to the rescue  once again, after a defence-splitting pass from Davide Frattesi allowed the striker to lift the ball over Genoa ‘keeper Pierluigi Gollini to put Inter ahead. The strike had initially been flagged for offside, but VAR intervened and allowed the goal.

It should’ve been plain sailing from there, but Genoa were awarded a penalty in the 94th minute, which was duly converted by  Messias, leaving the Milan giants with a disappointing draw in their Serie A opener.
