AC Milan are preparing for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie against Roma, and there is more than just sporting pride at stake.

Calcio e Finanza reports that winning and going through tonight could also guarantee entry into the top 20 of the UEFA rankings ahead of the 2024-25 season, a height that they have not reached for quite some time.

The Rossoneri have officially overtaken Juventus and that will be reflected in the standings next year, thanks to the Bianconeri’s absence from European competitions.

The UEFA five-year ranking – starting from next season – does not include the 2019-20 year in the calculation (since the last five seasons are considered), thus creating the conditions through which Milan can jump above Juve for the first time in 10 years.

Currently, the Rossoneri and Bianconeri are separated by 21 points in favour of the latter, a margin that seems comfortable but changes with the exclusion of the 2019-20 season and the inclusion of the current.

Precisely by virtue of this, Juve will lose 22 points while Milan lose zero, given that that was the season in which the Rossoneri negotiated with UEFA to agree an exclusion from the Europa League due to violations of Financial Fair Play.

It is a situation not too dissimilar to that experienced by Juve this year with the UEFA Conference League, after the capital gains and salary manoeuvres case.

Here is the current ranking for Juve and Milan (with relative position in the general ranking):

17. Juventus – 80 points 29. Milan – 59 points

The projection of the 2024-25 UEFA ranking is as follows:

20. Milan –59 points 23. Juventus – 58 points

It can already be considered official, since Juventus are unable to accumulate points this season. The Rossoneri have not been ahead of Juventus since the 2013-14 season, when they were overtaken due to their run to the Champions League final in Berlin where they lost to Barcelona.

There we went from a situation where Milan were ahead by 18 points in 2013-14 to being 12 behind in the following season. The reason? Juve were in the Champions League final and the Rossoneri were out of any European competition. That was also the first of three years that saw Milan out of any UEFA club competition.

However, overtaking Juventus may not be Milan’s last achievement this season. In the event of progressing to the next round, and still with an eye towards 2024-25, the Diavolo could also overtake Napoli and move into the top 20 in the UEFA ranking.

Milan and Napoli are also currently separated by 21 points, but next season the Partenopei will lose 19 points. The gap would thus be two points, but in the event of access to the semi-finals of the Europa League, Milan would reach 62 points and would overtake.

Below is the top 20 in the standings from 2024-25:

Manchester City – 123 points Real Madrid – 113 points Bayern Munich – 107 points Liverpool – 94 points Rome – 86 points PSG – 85 points Villarreal – 82 points Chelsea – 79 points Inter – 76 points Borussia Dortmund – 74 points Porto – 70 points Leipzig – 70 points Manchester United – 70 points Benfica – 69 points West Ham – 68 points Atletico Madrid – 67 points Barcelona – 67 points Bayer Leverkusen – 66 points Arsenal – 62 points Naples – 61 points21. Milan – 59 points 22. Juventus – 58 points 24. Atalanta – 54 points 31. Lazio – 50 points 45. Fiorentina – 35 points
