Kilmarnock 2-3 Celtic. A Hoops debut for Thomas ‘Tully’ Craig who scored a double in this encounter against a Killie side who would go onto win the Scottish Cup in April. The Glasgow Herald wrote, “Celts owed their success mainly to the storming rushes of McAtee, the one forward on the sidelines physically equipped for a contest demanding strength and endurance.”

University of South Florida Bulls 1-5 Celtic. The winter shutdown saw Celtic jet off to some Florida sunshine for a period of relaxation and recuperation ahead of a challenging second half of the season. Celtic played a couple of friendly matches in the States which included this one against South Florida University. Lubo and Johnson grabbed doubles, and Sutton was also on the scoresheet.

Hibs 1-2 Celtic. Thousands of Celtic fans travelled to the capital which saw a crowd of more than 40,000 packed into Easter Road. Billy McNeill glanced in the game’s opener with a fine header from a wonderful Bertie Auld delivery. The match looked like it was heading for a share of the spoils until John Hughes netted a late winner.

17 January 2015

Hamilton 0-2 Celtic. Ronny Deila’s men had just returned from their winter break in Gran Canaria before heading to Lanarkshire. Adam Matthews opened the scoring with a stunning strike to give the visitors the lead in front of a record crowd at New Douglas Park [6007]. Liam Henderson made it 2-0 five minutes into the second half heaping the pressure on Aberdeen who remained top of the table. Post-match, Kris Commons threw his boots into the crowd and applauded the support. Rumours were circulating of an imminent departure for the midfield playmaker.

Tom Rogic signs for Celtic. A modern day fans-favourite, the Wizard of Oz spent nine tremendous years in Glasgow winning nine League Championships, four Scottish Cup’s and five Scottish League Cup’s. Whether it be his 30-yard belter at Rugby Park in 2016, his last-minute winner at Fir Park in the same year, his various stunning goals against theRangers or the iconic 90+3 individual brilliance to seal an Invincible Treble in 2017, Tom provided countless legendary moments in a Celtic jersey. Sadly retiring from football at the age of 30 in October 2023, Tom returned to Australia with his family. Speaking in 2022 after announcing his departure, the big Aussie said, “it’s amazing. When I signed for this club, I obviously knew the expectations were high. I’ve won a lot of trophies here, I’ve had ups and downs, injuries. There are so many memories. I’m speechless.”

Johnny Browning scored

SATURDAY 17 JANUARY 1914 – Even without Sunny Jim Young, Alec McNair and Andy McAtee, Celtic still win a difficult fixture at Dens Park, Dundee. Johnny Browning scores the only goal of the game, and once again Charlie Shaw is outstanding. The Dundee Courier moans about Celtic being lucky, but is also prepared to concede that Celtic have now probably won the League. They are indeed very far ahead.

Tom “Tully” Craig scored twice

SATURDAY 17 JANUARY 1920 – A good crowd of 10,000 are at Kilmarnock to see a good 3-2 win with two goals from Tom “Tully” Craig and one from the ever reliable Andy McAtee.

Charlie Nailer scored twice

SATURDAY 17 JANUARY 1932 – A much improved run of form since the New Year has now seen Celtic win three games in a row, and today they beat Falkirk 3-2 in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park with Charlie Napier scoring twice and Bertie Thomson once. The team had not yet completely come to terms with the death of John Thomson in September, and the Canadian replacement Joe Kennaway is still out injured, so John Falconer is in goal. But it is a good result and a run in the Scottish Cup will give everyone a welcome boost.

Billy McNeill scored

SATURDAY 17 JANUARY 1970 – Celtic pull off a brilliant win at a cold Easter Road today against Hibs. Billy McNeill scores with a header in the first half, and after Arthur Duncan levels for Hibs, John Hughes scores the winner with only four minutes to go. 45,000 see this game which keeps Celtic ahead in the League race.
