Celtic 4 Newcastle 0 – Saturday 19 July 2025 3pm
Instant fan / writer reaction from some of our regular/irregular contributors on The Mag.
Matt Busby said to Joe Harvey:
‘I don’t think anyone should get too carried away, a 4-0 win this afternoon and the retort would have been to “calm down, it’s only a friendly”.
Let’s judge things when the transfer business has been concluded and after we’ve played the Scousers at home.
Until then, other than Villa away, these games are largely meaningless as far as the final score goes.’
GToon:
‘This is about learning and I’m not sure we have learned anything new tbh.
Pope isnt good enough, Schar is slowing down, Willock can’t come up with the goods anymore and we need a new forward.
But I knew it, you knew it, Bruno knew it and more importantly Eddie has known it for ages too.
So get the cheque book out and get on with it.
It’s alright dismissing these friendlies but we want to go into the first game full of confidence, not full of concerns.’
Dave:
‘Obviously Celtic are two weeks ahead of Newcastle United in pre-season and have played a handful of pre-season friendlies already.
Season starts for Celtic in two weeks time.
Newcastle behind today when it came to fitness.’
Tony Mallabar:
‘First day back at school and certainly no complaints from me about the score.
Been a long day so hopefully I will do an article about it tomorrow with more details.
PS Was Osula auditioning for a job at KFC because today he was the perfect headless chicken.’
Jamie Smith:
‘Losing 4-0 is obviously horrible but a big part of me struggles to be that bothered.
Celtic’s goals were all either slightly fortunate (never a penalty) or against a weaker XI in the second half.
Two concerns.
One is the failure to create a serious goalscoring opportunity despite some outstanding openings created by Bruno. I am inclined to put this down to getting settled as this is basically one week into pre-season.
The second is of course the ongoing circus around Isak and damage it may well do to both this preparation and longer term prospects of the club.
Can’t complain about a decent trip to one of Britain’s great cities.
If Celtic think they’ll get this easy a ride should we return here in the Champions League (yes please) they’re in for a rude awakening.’
