Jamie Carragher has criticised Mohamed Salah for publicly discussing his unresolved contract situation at Liverpool, labelling the forward’s comments as ‘selfish’.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the former Reds defender said Salah’s remarks were an unnecessary distraction ahead of Liverpool’s crucial fixtures against Real Madrid and Manchester City.

“I must say I am very disappointed with Mo Salah,” Carragher stated. “Liverpool have Real Madrid midweek and Man City at the weekend. That’s the story right now.

“If he keeps putting comments out, his agent puts out cryptic messages, that is selfish. That is thinking about themselves and not the football club.” Carragher added that Liverpool’s focus should remain on their Premier League title charge, not contract renewals.

“The most important thing for Liverpool Football Club this season isn’t the future of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold,” he added. “The most important thing is Liverpool winning the Premier League.”However, Salah’s frustrations, particularly when he highlighted his connection with the fans, tell a different story.

“You know I have been in the club for many years – there is no club like this,” Salah told reporters. “But in the end, it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December, and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.”

Criticising Salah for his honesty feels harsh when he has been one of Liverpool’s most vital players for years.

His tenure at Anfield has coincided with a period of success, including the club’s first Premier League title in 30 years and a Champions League triumph.

Salah’s exceptional contributions have been instrumental in elevating Liverpool back to the pinnacle of English and European football.

The real issue lies with the club’s leadership. How has a player of Salah’s calibre – alongside Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold – been allowed to approach the final months of his contract without resolution?

Salah has already bagged 11 goals and 10 assists this season, proving he remains indispensable. If anything, his comments reflect a desire for clarity rather than selfishness.

His relationship with the fans is unquestionable, and his loyalty to the club has been evident throughout his time at Anfield.

As much as Liverpool’s future depends on team success, it also hinges on securing the futures of players who have brought glory back to the club.

Carragher’s criticism of Salah misses the mark – the real failure is the ownership’s lack of urgency in addressing his contract situation.
