AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale sent a message to the team and the entire staff after the first trophy of his tenure was won last night.
Milan produced a stunning comeback to beat their rivals Inter and lift the Supercoppa Italiana, triumphing 3-2 in Saudi Arabia. As if that wasn’t enough, it is the club’s 50th trophy in total, and it comes in the 125th anniversary season.
Lautaro Martinez and Mehdi Taremi scored either side of half-time to put Inter in command. However, the Rossoneri came roaring back: Theo Hernandez scored with a free-kick to halve the deficit, Christian Pulisic equalised and Tammy Abraham won it in the dying moments.
As mentioned, it is the first trophy of the ‘RedBird era’ at Milan and although Cardinale could not be present, he followed the game. Afterwards, he sent a message to the team through Zlatan Ibrahimovic, relayed below.
“Congratulations on this extraordinary result. Winning this trophy and doing it in a derby was special and something you should be deeply proud of,” he said (via MilanNews).
“The season so far has been challenging, but enjoy this moment and with this push return to Italy to reclaim the place that Milan deserves at the top of Serie A. I embrace you all and I am with you at all times.”
