Paddy Lane could be an ideal addition for Cardiff City as they rebuild for a League One promotion push

Cardiff City’s relegation to League One marks the start of a summer of change in South Wales - and it could open the door for a shrewd move for Portsmouth winger Paddy Lane.

Lane, 23, remains a popular figure at Fratton Park after playing a key role in Pompey’s title-winning League One campaign last season, notching 12 goals and becoming one of the division’s standout wide men.

However, a frustrating debut Championship season - marred by inconsistency and ultimately ended early by a knee injury in January - has cast doubt over his long-term future on the south coast.

According to Football League World's Portsmouth fan pundit, Lane could be among the players to make way as John Mousinho prepares to reshape his squad for a step up in ambitions and towards a younger demographic.

While the Pompey boss has publicly backed Lane to bounce back from his injury, some fans have questioned whether he will be given another chance or sold to make room for fresh faces.

If Lane does become available, Cardiff City should be near the front of the queue.

The Bluebirds are currently without a permanent manager following Aaron Ramsey’s brief spell as interim boss after the late-season dismissal of Omer Riza, and while their recruitment strategy is likely to take shape in the coming weeks, but one thing is already clear: they’ll need reinforcements out wide.

With Anwar El Ghazi and Josh Miete both out of contract, and the likes of Rubin Colwill, Ollie Tanner and Chris Willock potentially attracting interest or seeking moves following relegation, Cardiff’s wing is in flux.

A move for Lane - someone they previously enquired about during his Fleetwood days - would bring proven League One quality and a player with untapped potential at this level.

Despite his Championship struggles, Lane was beginning to show signs of progress before injury struck - his first goal in the second tier came on New Year’s Day against Swansea City, and he looked to be finding his rhythm.

That development, combined with his reputation and output in League One, should encourage a club like Cardiff to take a chance.

Lane's work rate, intelligent movement, and ability to cut inside and contribute goals from the flanks make him a valuable asset in the third tier.

At just 23, he has time on his side to rediscover form and confidence.

In a side aiming for promotion and a reset under new leadership, Lane could thrive once again - and Cardiff would be wise to make the first move.
