There is no shortage of interest in Cardiff City's Alex Robertson this summer.
There is no shortage of interest in Alex Robertson this summer, after he was part of the Cardiff City side relegated into Sky Bet League One.
Robertson, who joined Cardiff just last summer from Manchester City, has been linked to a dozen different clubs in the Championship alone, while clubs in mainland Europe and in America’s Major League Soccer (MLS) are also said to be keen on the talented midfielder this summer.
But, if the Bluebirds lose him this summer, there is a perfect replacement they should look to recruit from Blackpool's ranks.
Reports from Portsmouth-based outlet The News have suggested that Pompey are one of the interested parties in signing Robertson, who starred on loan at Fratton Park in the 2023/24 season, while it also cites that as many as a dozen second-tier clubs are looking to recruit him.
Journalist Jordan Cross said one of the potential suitors is a team that has just dropped into the Championship, with Ipswich Town, Southampton and an in-transition Leicester City being the three sides relegated from the Premier League.
It was also noted that interest for the 22-year-old has come from continental Europe as well, while there are signs an MLS is possible.
The former Manchester City youngster became a fan favourite at Portsmouth before his reported £1m move to Cardiff, a deal which could rise as high as £3m if various add-on criteria are met.
Robertson made 39 appearances across all competitions for the Bluebirds last season, posting three goals and three assists in Championship action.
His prior loan spell at Fratton Park saw him play 27 times in Pompey colours, with that being a potential destination for the sought-after cool-headed midfielder.
If Cardiff do lose one of their star men this summer, which would be no surprise after an impressive Championship campaign, then Blackpool may hold the answer to their problems.
Replacing the talents of Robertson would be no easy feat, though the Tangerines’ Albie Morgan fits the bill.
The central midfielder, who can also operate on either flank, scored five goals and provided seven assists in the 2024/25 league campaign. That came across 36 appearances.
A former Charlton Athletic man, Morgan has played 84 times for Blackpool with double figures of both goals and assists across that time.
It would not be easy to pull him away from Bloomfield Road, with the 25-year-old having another year left on his Blackpool contract. However, if Cardiff could poach Morgan from one of their League One rivals, it would boost their chances of having a good season with unproven new boss Brian Barry-Murphy.
Steve Bruce is building a strong team at Bloomfield Road this summer, but Morgan would be a great fit for Cardiff too.
His creativity and ability to fire a goal from long-range are key ingredients to Robertson’s game, and while the Aussie has not left City just yet, the club need to prepare for life without one of their top performers.
Morgan provides a fantastic replacement, with one forward-looking midfielder being able to fill the void left by another if the wide-ranging interest pulls Robertson away from League One newboys Cardiff this summer.
He ranks highly in a long list of areas among his third tier counterparts, and would no doubt ease the worries of the Bluebirds should they agree a deal to allow the gifted playmaking midfielder to leave this summer.
