Newcastle United official release – 8 July 2025:
‘More than 1,000 people in the North East were given a once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet the Carabao Cup last week, as Newcastle United Foundation led a memorable trophy tour across the region.
Celebrating Newcastle United’s first domestic trophy triumph in 70 years, the club’s Foundation proudly took the Carabao Cup on a journey into the heart of the community.
Covering over 70 miles – from Benton to Blaydon and beyond – the three-day trophy tour harnessed recent cup success to inspire community members of all ages using the power of football.
The trophy was showcased at 12 locations, directly engaging more than 1,000 individuals through appearances at primary schools and Foundation Partner schools, community hubs and Newcastle’s Great North Children’s Hospital.
Highlights also featured heartwarming visits to Newcastle United Foundation’s Walking Football League at Cochrane Park and the Family Gateway Hub in Wallsend where the Foundation provides a Community Hub service for North Tyneside residents, alongside stops at Foundation partners, Newcastle Building Society and Sage.
The tour culminated at the Foundation’s state-of-the-art home, NUCASTLE, where programme participants had a chance to relive memories of the cup win while viewing the coveted trophy in person.
A standout moment of the tour was a special visit to the Great North Children’s Hospital, where Newcastle United Foundation staff work year-round with patients to provide vital respite through activities, games and team building. The trophy tour visit offered a chance for patients and their families to capture precious memories through photos with the Carabao Cup.
Discussing the impact of the appearance, Dr Mark Anderson, Consultant Paediatrician at the Great North Children’s Hospital, said: “Time in hospital can be difficult and often very boring for young children, so little visits like this brighten their day and help to perk them up. Having an opportunity to get off the wards to see such an iconic trophy – and Newcastle’s first silverware for many years – is fantastic. It was a wonderful morning watching their faces light up as soon as they saw the cup.”
LEAVING A LEGACY
Liz Twist MP for Blaydon and Consett also joined a Walking Football session visited by the cup in Gateshead. Following an hour of physical activity, participants spent time at a Football Talks session, discussing mental wellbeing and tools to working towards better physical and mental health.
Walking Football is supported by the Premier League and Professional Footballer’s Association. Administered through the Premier League Charitable Fund, the funding helps football clubs to tackle inequality and respond to local challenges, supporting people and their communities to be more inclusive.
Andy Foster, Director of Programmes and Impact at Newcastle United Foundation, said: “The incredible scenes across the city following the Carabao Cup victory were a powerful reminder of how deeply Newcastle United is rooted in the community. It felt so important for the Foundation to give communities in our region their moment with the trophy, and a chance to be part of something historic.
“The trophy tour has put smiles on a lot of faces, engaging children in primary schools to lifelong supporters on our walking football programme.
“We hope the legacy of the cup win continues to inspire people of all ages to get involved in the game, embracing not just enjoyment of sport, but the social, mental and physical health benefits it provides.”
